Room 0

Jorja is writing the sounds that Jessie puts up on the big whiteboard.
Welcome to Room 0. It is a small room off the main learning center that is set up like a mini classroom. The children teach each other as if they were in their own classroom. They take on the role of student or teacher and work together to improve their own learning. This is a choice activity and is very popular by many children.

The girls look on as they wait for Jessie to write up the lesson for them.

Thinking - thinking.

The teacher is managing her class very well. They are all focused, engaged and on task. Great work Jessie. Super learning done by all.

The Tube

The tube is a special place we can sit to be on our own or relax and enjoy a story with a friend. We can still see what is happening but feel like we are in our own place. Great reading practice William and Amelia.

GO Fireman Glen!!!

Fireman Glen Thurston is off to Seattle on Friday to complete in the stair climb challenge in full fireman's kit wearing his breathing apparatus. We are very proud of him and what he has accomplished. All of the money raised from the challenge goes towards cancer research, which is awesome. Fireman Glen came to visit to show us the clothes he will be wearing and what the breathing mask sounds like. We all went for a run with him around the school, then we sang him a song - Flick the little fire engine. We made him some stories to take with him so he doesn't forget how much we will be thinking of him on the day. Wanaka Sun, newspaper came to take photos of Glen with pod 2 so keep a look out this week.

Construction

These amazing learners have been experimental with their designs using lego and straws to make unique and creative machines. Some fly, some roll, some are wide and some are huge. They can all explain in great detail their learning and how each part works. They are now sharing ideas to extend each others thinking and challenge their designs even further. During sharing time we can compare their finished products to talk about basic elements of form and function.

Measuring on our own

Our investigation into understanding measurement continues. Check out the different ways we have helped each other with measurement using different things in different ways. This type of learning alongside intensive teaching has lifted our test scores really high in a very short amount of time. Well done Pod 2. Great independent learning.

Measuring the Kakano way ...

For week 1 and 2 we have been learning all about measurement. It has been exciting to see how the children have been practising their learning independently through our learning spaces. Here are 3 examples of different ways to find out about longer, shorter, taller and even some ways to measure this.
A group of boys including Myles, Monty, Jack and Jah joined the construction straws together to see how long they could make it. What a big challenge, nearly the length of Pod 2!

Blaise and Ania Kanu working together to find out how to measure a row of beads. Blaise was able to read the numbers on the measuring tape and make sure she had started at the baseline, great investigating.
Amelia, Arliya and Sophie measured all of the teddies to see which one was the tallest and which one was the shortest. Very proudly they asked to go on the blog to share their learning. What was the next challenge? To build a house using the construction straws that was the right size for the toys ...
